Lauren + Ben | An Old Southern Tradition | The Carolina Inn

Southern Bride

As we begin a new season of the year and welcome the cooler breeze and cozy scarf weather, we can’t help but reflect back on some of the fantastic weddings we were so fortunate to be a part of this summer. One that is particularly top of mind today — Lauren & Ben’s Southern Summer wedding, steeped in tradition, simplistic beauty, and a whole lot of fun. This couple knew how to play their cards right. Not only did they summon up some good old Southern folk lore to chase the rain away, they were blessed with a breathtaking double rainbow to prove it. How you might ask, did the forecast of 100% chance of rain on L+B’s wedding day turn into a sunshine filled afternoon as they said “I Do”? Well you’ll have to keep reading to find out their secret…Miss Dior wedding day

Carolina Blue Bridesmaids

Lauren chose a soft blue hue for her bridemaids’ gowns by Amsale, reminiscent of her Alma Mater , UNC Chapel Hill. The bright white and blush bouquets filled with peonies, hydrangea, and of course peonies, were created by the ever talented, Tre Bella Florist. Lauren’s gown may have been the crown jewel of the day, so elegant and quintessentially Southern. A design by Romona Keveza, and chosen from Traditions by Anna in Raleigh, North Carolina, the lace sleeve detail was breathtaking and Lauren was absolutely stunning in it.

University Presbyterian Wedding Chapel Hill

So I promised you the secret to sunshine on your wedding day. True to Southern tradition and proved to be accurate by Lauren + Ben, they buried a bottle of bourbon the month before their wedding day in the place they were to be married.  So once the vows were said and the knot was tied, Ben and his new Father-in-Law dug up the bottle and toasted to the good weather and the new Mr. and Mrs. Leader! When all the guests were safely to the Carolina Inn for the evening’s festivities, the clouds released and Chapel Hill was sprinkled with a sweet spring rain and capped off with the most amazing double rainbow right above the Carolina Inn for all to see.

One of my favorite personal elements that we brought into Lauren + Ben’s design was a nod to both of their sweet Pups, Millie and Riggs. Each had their namesake on a signature craft cocktail that guests sipped on throughout the evening. The Champagne inspired Millie and the Bourbon inspired Riggs.

Merideth + Edwin | Festive Mountain Wedding | Asheville Wedding

preceremony-merideth-edwin-001

When a bride comes to us dreaming up a wedding day full of bright colors and a fusion of two deep rooted heritages, we can’t help but get excited! Merideth + Edwin wanted a day that brought two families together as one, his family from Guatemala and hers from South Carolina. Although there were many difference between the places they grew up, one thing is for certain, both families knew hospitality and wanted their guests to have a fantastic time celebrating M+E!

preceremony-merideth-edwin-004

The bride and groom selected a location that was dear to their hearts, and coincidentally, mine. Edwin is a minister for the Presbyterian Church and it was important that this be incorporated in their wedding plans. They chose a beautiful spot nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Gaither Chapel (which also happens to be in my home town and the place where my husband and I were married 4 years ago)! Aside from incorporating all the vivacious colors that are so much a part of Latin American culture, it was also important to Merideth that music was a key part of the day. She is a enormously talented artist of the Oboe and is a professor at North Carolina School of the Arts

ceremony-merideth-edwin-021

Merideth hand selected a few close musician friends and talented artists to perform an elegant prelude for all her guests. Even though we had her tucked away before her walk down the aisle, she wanted to be able to hear the music that was so dear to her heart!

This by far goes down as one of the best recessionals I have ever been a part of. We brought in a authentic Gospel Choir from Charleston, South Carolina to surprise guests and litter sing the couple out of the chapel. “Oh Happy Day” could be heard throughout Montreat as Merideth and Edwin walked out into the spring sunshine as a newly married couple!

The reception design was all about vibrancy and happy colors. Blending varying shades of coral, orange, fuchsia, and rich greenery with pop of gold the rustic barn was transformed into a elevated and bright reception space. Guests were invited to enjoy a truly fusion menu of Southern and Latin favorites, signature cocktails in vintage colored glassware, and sounds of a fantastic Cuban band.

The inspiration for the color palate was pulled from custom made runners that Edwin’s mother brought from her native Guatemala. They accented the farm tables that were mixed into the design plan.

Kate + Michael | Magnolia Wedding Magic | The Carolina Inn

Green Wedding Details

If there ever was a classically stunning bride, it was Kate. Every choice she made for her wedding added to the elegance of the day. Guests must have known they were in for a treat when they opened their envelopes to find a lovely magnolia inspired envelope holding their invitation. She and Michael didn’t disappoint. Kate donned a beautiful lace gown that fit her just perfectly — paired with a glittering pair of Jimmy Choos, every girl’s wedding day dream. Gifted with a beautiful day full of summer sun, the couple said I do in Chapel of the Cross, a gorgeous church in the heart of Chapel Hill. As they made their exit from the chapel, the afternoon light was just perfect for what turned out to be jaw-dropping portraits captured by Nancy Ray Photography. Kate’s wedding day inspiration came from her Alma Mater, Wake Forest, where the campus is dotted with magnificent magnolia trees at every turn.

Danielle + Alex | Boho Chic Fall Wedding | The Cotton Room

Watters Gown Boho Bride

Danielle + Alex’s design was created around a gorgeous boho chic vest from Anthropologie that she loved. We wanted to bring a garden feel into the rustic feel of the Cotton Room. We brought in pops of sparkle in the champagne sequin linens, gold rimmed chargers, and gold table numbers, to add a sophisticated edge to the boho feel of the space. Danielle and Alex brought in creative pieces of themselves by offering a local coffee brand as favors for the guests and even bringing in a espresso bar during their reception. She also chose to integrate farm tables to give the reception a cozy and intimate family gathering feel. We incorporated beautiful wooden custom signage as an element that Danielle and Alex could have as a keepsake in their home.

Vicki + Tom | Broadway Bliss | Private Home Wedding

VickiTom_00870

From the beginning, we knew Victoria + Tom’s wedding would be different, not just different, enchanting. They described their vision for the celebration with a theme of “Blue Moon/Love is…”  and the look as “country casual elegance”. We were thrilled to assist this Tony Award winning actress with such a romantic production!

Victoria chose costume designer Catherine Zuber to create her blush colored gown and walked down the aisle to, “Be Gentle, Be Honest” sung by the original artist, Jane Kelly Williams. Rich purples, soothing creams and lemony yellows were pulled in from the invitations, to the florals, linens and cake.

Guests were greeted with a refreshing glass of a lemon ginger shrub under tall branches strung with candles at the foyer of the Bride’s Brother’s home. A unique cantilevered deck which jetted into the forest was the perfect spot for their vows. T.L., the Bride’s Son, sang “Some Enchanted Evening” which certainly defined the night’s festivities.

Cocktail hour was filled with a mix of Bluegrass and Irish music as gazpacho shooters were preset at each place setting. Guests were served family style on a mix of long and round tables set on the deck just outside the home. One of the most memorable moments came as a friend gave a “Harvest Toast” and invited guests to pick up sunflower seeds that had been scattered on the tables, encouraging them to gift them to those they are thankful for. The toast ended as this spirited friend threw the seeds in the air amid cheers and clapping for the couple.

As if this moment weren’t enchanting enough, the crowd then moved inside for scores of beautiful songs and dancing before the cake was cut and a multitude of desserts were displayed. Events like this are the most memorable because of the intimacy and originality the couple embrace throughout the planning. After all, they only happen once in a blue moon and we were honored to have been there!

Elisa + Craig | Social Media Sweethearts | Chapel Hill Wedding

Southern Weddings

Not many couples can say they met through Instagram but such is the case with Elisa + Craig – #howcuteisthat? You never know what can come about when you start “following” someone on social media! What came about for these two was a Great Gatsby-inspired wedding tailored to the couple’s romantic vision of gold, white and timelessness.  Elisa stepped straight off the runway in a stunning gown and picture-perfect hair and makeup (Can we say Old Hollywood at its best!?) while Craig sported a classic black tux. In fact, you may recognize this gorgeous couple as they are featured in the ad on the back cover of Southern Weddings Magazine and a blog feature!

Carly was a classic beauty and timeless bride. She and her mother were such a delight to plan with throughout the process. It was important to both Carly and Earl that their marriage remain the center focus of their celebration. They wanted to incorporate details that were personal to them and their relationship. They chose Prestonwood Country club since Cary is where Carly grew up! She also has her new monogram embroidered into her gown for her walk down the aisle, which also happened to be in blue! In bringing Carly’s vision for her wedding day to life, she knew she wanted a classic and elegant theme, but wanted to bring the outdoors inside the reception. We were able to do this through gorgeous centerpieces, cool hedging, and warm amber uplighting to illuminate the space.

A Holiday in the Pines | Event Design | Carolina Wedding Planner

Winter Tablescape

If  you could plan your idyllic dinner party for your closest friends, where would it be? We had this vision of a Southern afternoon holiday affair under the Pines of Eastern North Carolina. Sure, some might think we are crazy, but that is the beauty of it. With the weather on our side this year, this vision could be real. What could be more beautiful than a crisp white table set for 6 in the midst of such an organic setting. Bringing together the delicate sequin lace in the linen and the unexpected pop of rose gold stemmed champagne glasses and flatware against the rustic forest floor taking  your guests  on a journey to a scene from the iconic children’s book, “The Mitten”. You might even expect to see a mother doe stop by to say hello.

Christmas Dinner Party

Christmas is a time for magic, a time for visions to come to life in the pages of  children’s storybooks. Why not bring some of that magic to your holiday celebration? Think outside the box, bring a little of the unexpected to your table. Incorporate metallics or create an organic centerpiece from greenery out of your own back yard. Choose a talking pieces like a candelabra or interesting ghost accent chairs. Your guests will love your thoughtfulness and your table will exude a warmth and glow that makes the holidays so special.

Crisp White Table

Gold Calligraphy

Hand lettering your dinner menu is another way to make your guests feel like they are being treated to something unique – something special. Incorporate place cards and a signature cocktail to welcome them to the table. We incorporated the pine and bright blooms to warm the table and compliment the earthy metallics at each place setting.

Creating events that engage guest’s senses through textures, smells, colors, and a true experience from start to finish makes us happy. The holidays make us happy.
